Executive Director Position Description & Application Information

Overview: Fiddlehead Center for the Arts – Scarborough seeks an experienced, results-driven, and passionate professional to serve as the Executive Director of this thriving nonprofit organization.

Fiddlehead Scarborough was created in 2005 to enrich the lives of the students and adults in Scarborough and surrounding communities. Fiddlehead currently offers a variety of popular arts and science enrichment programs for people of all ages with a focus on K-5 students. Programs  include: before care, aftercare, no-school days and holidays; music lessons; homeschool programs; summer camps; break camps; and adult workshops.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is the lead operational and program manager of the center. The E.D. has the overall responsibility to manage Fiddlehead’s programs, communications, staff, finances, and facilities. Successful candidates will be strong team leaders with a proven record of effective community relations and organizational management.

Job Title: Executive Director

Key Responsibilities:

  • Organizational leadership to ensure effective community outreach, student enrollment, and high-quality services.

    • Parent and student communications and resources

    • Marketing, outreach, and strategic planning

    • Student registration and paperwork

    • In-classroom duties

    • Parent engagement

    • Discipline

    • Hands-on problem solving

  • Oversight of Fiddlehead’s variety of enrichment programs and services.

    • Program development and curriculum review

    • Teacher scheduling and support

    • Special events management

  • Staff leadership including hiring, scheduling, supervision, and reviews.

  • Business management and resource development.

    • Pricing, billing, and collections

    • Bookkeeping and financial reporting

    • Website and social media

    • Fundraising, including grant writing, sponsorships, and donation solicitation

    • Vendor selection and management

    • Legal and compliance

    • Facility management

    • Supplies sourcing

  • Board support.

    • Board and committee meeting agendas, preparation, and materials

    • Regular reporting: enrollment and attendance; finances; special issues

    • Support for board initiatives

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Interest in and passion for leading an organization that provides a positive, safe, and fun learning environment for kids and adults.

  • 5+ years of nonprofit, small business, or public sector management experience.

  • Exemplary interpersonal and customer relations skills.

  • Team leadership and supervisory skills for working with staff and community partners.

  • Experience with development and oversight of enrichment programs; experience working in arts, science, or education fields is a plus.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, scheduling, budgeting, bookkeeping, and reporting.

  • Proficient with a range of technology and applications.

  • Experience with grant-writing and fundraising a plus.

  • Collaborative approach, flexibility, roll-up-your-sleeves attitude, and creative problem-solving.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent accomplishments.
